- To Be A King’s Barber – Xin cạo râu vua
Once upon a time, a king’s personal attendant risked his life to save the king at the battlefield. The king was so grateful that he gave his lifesaver whatever he wanted. The king asked, “What do you want? Your wishes shall be granted.”
The man replied, “Allow me to shave you when you need a shave.”- The king said, “If that is what you wish to do, I’ll grant it to you.”- Such a stupid man is laughed at by the people at large. It would be so much better for the barber to ask for half a country or to become prime minister or minister of State rather than to practice the mean profession. Only a stupid man would do so.
Xưa ông vua có một người thân-tín liều mình trong quân-trận để cứu vua được an-toàn. Nhà vua vui mừng bảo: “Khanh muốn gì, cầu gì trẫm tha hồ cho khanh được toại nguyện!” Người ấy thưa: “Tâu Đại-vương, thần chỉ xin Đại-vương khi nào Đại-vương cần cạo râu, xin cho thần cạo!” Nhà vua nói: “Gì chứ việc ấy nếu hợp với ý khanh trẫm cũng cho khanh theo sở-nguyện!” Đời ai cũng chê cười là ngu-si: “Chà, xin cai-trị nửa nước hay làm quan đại-thần, phụ-tướng không được đâu mà lại đi xin cái nghề hèn-hạ ấy!”
To attain Buddhadhood, all Buddhas cultivate themselves with hardship during a long and painful period of time. What people do not realize is that Buddha Sakyamuni’s bequeathed teachings are scarce to be heard and our human bodies are hard to be acquired as well. It is like a blind turtle’s trouble in finding a log hole floating at the surface of the water. Fortunately, enough, once these two difficulties are overcome, people are self-complacent with their shallow mind and few commandments are observed without any ambition of ever attaining Nirvana, the perfect Enlightenment. They find themselves contented with no further improvement and instead end up doing evil deeds.
Người ngu cũng thế. Chư Phật trong vô lượng kiếp làm những hạnh khổ khó làm mà được thành Phật. Gặp được Phật, gặp được giáo-pháp và được thân người toàn-vẹn là khó, khác gì như con rùa mù gặp được hốc gỗ nổi trên biển cả. Nay sự khó gặp đã được song, tâm-ý kém-cỏi, giữ được ít giới cho là đủ, không cần cầu diệu-pháp Niết-bàn tối-thắng nữa, như người không có tâm cầu tiến, tự làm việc tà đã cho là đủ!
