Once there were five men who together bought a maid to whom one of them said, “Get my clothes washed.”- Another man also told her to do the same thing. But the maid said he would wash for whoever gave her clothes first. Angrily the second man said, “Since I have bought you with others, how can you wash only for the first one who gave the elder?”- Then he beat her ten strokes with a whip. Thus, she was whipped as much by each of the five masters.
Xưa có năm người chung nhau thuê một người ở. Trong năm người, một người bảo họ giặt áo. Sau lại có một người khác bảo giặt áo, người ở bảo: “Theo thứ-tự tôi phải giặt áo cho ông đưa trước đã rồi tôi sẽ giặt cho ông!” Người thứ hai giận bảo: “Ta cùng người trước thuê mi, sao mi chỉ giặt riêng cho người ấy?” Nói rồi, người kia lấy roi đánh mười roi. Và, cứ thế lần-lượt năm người đều đánh mỗi người mười roi.
So are the five components of human bodies, which are the sources of annoyances. They whip the sentient beings with birth giving, old age, sickness, death and numerous other miseries.
Năm Ấm (sắc, thụ, tưởng, hành, thức) cũng thế. Phiền-não nhân-duyên họp thành thân này nhưng, năm Ấm này thường đem sinh, lão, bệnh, tử cùng nhiều khổ-não đánh đập chúng-sinh. Năm người dụ cho năm Ấm và người ở dụ cho tấm thân này vậy!
