Hồn tử sĩ gió ù ù thổi,
Mặt chinh phu trăng dõi dõi soi,
Chinh phu tử sĩ mấy người,
Nào ai mạc mặt, nào ai gọi hồn?
The soul of the dead of the wind whistles,
This moon shines that keeps watching
Play on the faces of fighting husbands.

Một câu chuyện tình thủy chung. Một bài thơ của ngày chiến sĩ trận vong (30 tháng 5 năm 2020).
Một gia đình Mỹ gồm hai vợ chồng và đứa con gái chung sống cùng nhau. Khi cô con gái lên 4 thì người cha nhập ngũ và được đưa đến chiến trường Việt Nam. Người lính tử trận nên đã không trở về. Người mẹ ở vậy nuôi con đến năm 80 tuổi thì mất. Khi bà qua đời, cô con gái tìm thấy một bức thư trong đồ đạc của mẹ, trong đó có bài thơ này.
A faithful love stories. A poem of the Memorial Day (May 30, 2020).
An American family consists of a couple and a daughter living together. When her daughter turned 4, the father enlisted and was taken to the Vietnam battlefield. The soldier died, so he did not return. The mother stayed there to raise her child until the age of 80. When she died, her daughter found a letter in her mother’s belongings, including this poem.
Remember the day I borrowed your brand-new car and dented it?
I thought you’d kill me…
But you didn’t.
Em còn nhớ ngày em mượn xe anh
Chiếc xe mới toanh bị em làm móp thủng
Em đã nghĩ thế nào anh cũng giết em chết.
Nhưng anh đã không.
And remember the time I dragged you to the beach,
And you said it would rain, and it did?
I thought you’d say, “I told you so”…
But you didn’t.
Có một lần em lôi anh ra biển
Anh nói rằng trời sẽ đổ cơn mưa và mưa thật.
Em nghĩ rằng anh sẽ trách “đã bảo mà”.
Nhưng anh đã không.
Do you remember the time I flirted with all
the guys to make you jealous, and you were?
I thought you’d leave,
But you didn’t.
Có một lần em theo ỏng ẹo với các chàng trai,
để làm anh ghen và anh ghen thật?
Em nghĩ trong khi ghen tức, anh sẽ chia tay em.
Nhưng anh đã không.
Do you remember the time I spilled strawberry pie
all over your car rug?
I thought you’d hit me,
But you didn’t.
Còn nhớ lần em làm chiếc bánh kem dâu
đổ tung toé xuống sàn xe anh
Em vội nghĩ thế nào anh cũng sẽ đánh em.
Nhưng anh đã không.
And remember the time I forgot to tell you the dance
was formal and you showed up in jeans?
I thought you’d drop me,
But you didn’t.
Còn nhớ lần em quên nói với anh là buổi khiêu vũ sẽ vô cùng
trang trọng, anh xuất hiện trong chiếc quần jean lạc lõng,
Em sợ anh sẽ bỏ về.
Nhưng anh đã không.
Yes, there were lots of things you didn’t do….
But you put up with me, and loved me, and protected me
There were lots of things I wanted to make up to you
when you returned from Vietnam….
Vâng có nhiều điều mà anh đã không làm
Nhưng anh yêu quý em và bảo vệ em
Có nhiều điều mà lòng em hứa, sẽ đền bù lại
khi anh trở về từ Việt Nam…
I was waiting for you to come home…
But you didn’t!
Em đợi anh về…
Nhưng anh đã không!
