Once a musician played in the presence of the king who had promised him a thousand coins. Later, he asked the king for the money. The king refused to give it to him and said, “The music you played doesn’t make me merry for a long time. Therefore, the money that I intent to give you is also to please you just for a while.”
Xưa có người con hát tấu nhạc vui trước nhà vua. Nhà vua hứa cho nghìn tiền. Xong việc, người ấy vào hỏi nhà vua số tiền ấy. Nhà vua không trả, bảo: “Người tấu nhạc vui, vui cho ngươi chứ có vui gì cho ta. Nay ta cho ngươi tiền lại làm vui thêm cho ngươi nữa à?
So is the wordy retribution. While there is little pleasure in human lives and in Heaven, there is also little substance in them. Owing to impermanence and destruction, the pleasure does not last for long just like the music giving only a transient rejoicing.
Quả-báo thế-gian cũng thế. Trong cõi người hay trên cõi trời tuy hưởng được chút vui sướng nhưng, không có gì là thực, vì nó còn bị vô-thường tan-diệt không lâu-bền được, như tấu nhạc vui không kia vậy!
