I. THE FIRST SUBCHAPTER – Phần Một – Phẩm Một

1 (1) Mindfulness Directed to the body – Thân

1) At Sāvatthı̄.

— “Bhikkhus, I will teach you the unconditioned and the path leading to the unconditioned. Listen to that….

2) “And what, bhikkhus, is the unconditioned? The destruction of lust, the destruction of hatred, the destruction of delusion: this is called the unconditioned.

3) “And what, bhikkhus, is the path leading to the unconditioned? Mindfulness directed to the body: this is called the path leading to the unconditioned.

4) “Thus, bhikkhus, I have taught you the unconditioned and the path leading to the unconditioned.

5) Whatever should be done, bhikkhus, by a compassionate teacher out of compassion for his disciples, desiring their welfare, that I have done for you.

6) These are the feet of trees, bhikkhus, these are empty huts. Meditate, bhikkhus, do not be negligent, lest you regret it later. This is our instruction to you.”

1) — Này các Tỷ-kheo, Ta sẽ giảng về pháp vô vi và con đường đưa đến vô vi (asankhata). Hãy lắng nghe.

2) Và này các Tỷ-kheo, thế nào là vô vi? Này các Tỷ-kheo, sự đoạn tận tham, sự đoạn tận sân, sự đoạn tận si. Này các Tỷ-kheo, đây gọi là vô vi.

3) Và này các Tỷ-kheo, thế nào là con đường đưa đến vô vi? Thân niệm (kàyagatà sati), này các Tỷ-kheo, đây gọi là con đường đưa đến vô vi.

4) Như vậy, này các Tỷ-kheo, Ta thuyết về vô vi, Ta thuyết về con đường đưa đến vô vi.

5) Này các Tỷ-kheo, những gì một bậc Ðạo sư cần phải làm cho những đệ tử, vì hạnh phúc, vì lòng từ mẫn, vì khởi lên lòng từ mẫn đối với họ ; tất cả, Ta đã làm đối với các Ông.

6) Này các Tỷ-kheo, đây là những gốc cây, đây là những căn nhà trống, hãy tu tập Thiền định. Chớ có phóng dật. Chớ để hối hận về sau. Ðây là lời giáo giới của Ta cho các Ông.

2 (2) Serenity and Insight – Chỉ (Samatha)

— “Bhikkhus, I will teach you the unconditioned and the path leading to the unconditioned. Listen to that….

3 (3) With Thought and Examination – Tầm

1-3) … “And what, bhikkhus, is the path leading to the unconditioned? Concentration with thought and examination; concentration without thought, with examination only; concentration without thought and examination: this is called the path leading to the unconditioned….”

1-3)– Và này các Tỷ-kheo, thế nào là con đường đưa đến vô vi? Có định có tầm, có tứ; có định không tầm, có tứ; có định không tầm, không tứ. Này các Tỷ-kheo, đây gọi là con đường đưa đến vô vi.

4 (4) Emptiness Concentration – Không

1-3) … “And what, bhikkhus, is the path leading to the unconditioned? The emptiness concentration, the signless concentration, the undirected concentration: this is called the path leading to the unconditioned….”

— “Bhikkhus, I will teach you the unconditioned and the path leading to the unconditioned. Listen to that….

2) — “And what, bhikkhus, is the unconditioned? The destruction of lust, the destruction of hatred, the destruction of delusion: this is called the unconditioned.

3) “And what, bhikkhus, is the path leading to the unconditioned? Serenity: this is called the path leading to the unconditioned….

4-6) “Thus, bhikkhus, I have taught you the unconditioned and the path leading to the unconditioned…. This is our instruction to you.”

1) — Này các Tỷ-kheo, Ta sẽ thuyết về vô vi, và về con đường đưa đến vô vi. Hãy lắng nghe.

2) — Này các Tỷ-kheo, thế nào là vô vi? Này các Tỷ-kheo, sự đoạn tận tham, sự đoạn tận sân, sự đoạn tận si; này các Tỷ-kheo, đây gọi là vô vi.

2) Và này các Tỷ-kheo, thế nào là vô vi? Này các Tỷ-kheo, sự đoạn tận tham, sự đoạn tận sân, sự đoạn tận si ; này các Tỷ-kheo, đây gọi là vô vi.

Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu generates desire for the non-arising of un arisen evil unwholesome states; he makes an effort, arouses energy, applies his mind, and strives: this is called the path leading to the unconditioned….”

XIV – XVI. Bốn Chánh Cần (2-4)

44 (33) The Destination – Ðến Bờ Bên Kia

1) — “Bhikkhus, I will teach you the destination and the path leading to the destination. Listen to that….

2) “And what, bhikkhus, is the destination? The destruction of lust, the destruction of hatred, the destruction of delusion: this is called the destination.

3) “And what, bhikkhus, is the path leading to the destination? Mindfulness directed to the body: this is called the path leading to the destination.

4) “Thus, bhikkhus, I have taught you the destination and the path leading to the destination.

5) Whatever should be done, bhikkhus, by a compassionate teacher out of compassion for his disciples, desiring their welfare, that I have done for you.

6) — These are the feet of trees, bhikkhus, these are empty huts. Meditate, bhikkhus, do not be negligent, lest you regret it later. This is our instruction to you.”
