Verse 197. Happiness
We the unhating live
Happily, midst the haters,
Among the hating humans
From hatred dwell we free.
“Vui thay, chúng ta sống
Không hận, giữa hận thù!
Giữa những người thù hận
Ta sống, không hận thù!”
Explanation:
Happy indeed we live, friendly amidst the hostile. Amidst hostile men we dwell free from hatred.
- Sung sướng thay chúng ta sống không thù oán giữa những người thù oán. Giữa những người thù oán, ta sống không thù oán.
Verse 198. Without Sickness among the Sick
We who are healthy live
Happily, midst the unhealthy,
Among unhealthy humans
From ill-health dwell we free.
“Vui thay, chúng ta sống,
Không bệnh, giữa ốm đau!
Giữa những người bệnh hoạn
Ta sống, không ốm đau.”
Explanation:
Happy indeed we live, unafflicted amidst the afflicted (by craving). Amidst afflicted men we dwell free from affliction.
- Sung sướng thay chúng ta sống không tật bệnh giữa những người tật bệnh. Giữa những người tật bệnh, ta sống không tật bệnh.
Verse 199. Not Anxious Among the Anxious
We the unfrenzied live
Happily, midst the frenzied,
Among the frenzied humans
From frenzy dwell we free.
“Vui thay, chúng ta sống,
Không rộn giữa rộn ràng;
Giữa những người rộn ràng,
Ta sống, không rộn ràng.”
Explanation:
Happy indeed we live, free from avarice amidst the avaricious. Amidst avaricious men we dwell free from avarice.
- Sung sướng thay chúng ta sống không tham dục giữa những người tham dục! Giữa những người tham dục, ta sống không tham dục.
Verse 200. Happily, They Live – Undefiled
We for whom there’s nought
Live indeed so happily,
Joy-stained we’ll be
Like resplendent gods.
“Vui thay chúng ta sống
Không gì, gọi của ta.
Ta sẽ hưởng hỷ lạc
Như chư thiên Quang Âm.”
Explanation:
Happy indeed we live, we who possess nothing. Feeders on joy we shall be, like the Radiant Gods.
- Sung sướng thay chúng ta sống không bị điều gì chướng ngại, ta thường sống với những điều hỷ lạc như những vị trời Quang âm 27.
27 Quang Âm Thiên: Phạn ngữ: Abhàsvara. Pali: Abhassara. Một trong các tầng trời cõi Sắc, tức là tầng trời thứ ba của đệ nhị thiền, tầng trời nầy ở trên Vô Lượng Quang Thiên và ở dưới Thiểu Tịnh Thiên, chúng sanh cõi nầy không có âm thanh, do định tâm phát ra ánh sáng thay thế ngôn ngữ để truyền đạt ý nghĩa, nên gọi là Quang Âm Thiên.
Verse 201. Happy About both Victory and Defeat
Victory gives rise to hate,
Those defeated lie in pain,
Happily rest the Peaceful
Surrendering victory-defeat.
“Chiến thắng sinh thù oán
Thất bại chịu khổ đau,
Sống tịch tịnh an lạc.
Bỏ sau mọi thắng bại.”
Explanation:
Victory begets enmity; the defeated dwell in pain. Happily the peaceful live, discarding both victory and defeat.
- Thắng lợi thì bị thù oán, thất bại thì bị đau khổ; chẳng màng tới thắng bại, sẽ sống hòa hiếu an vui.
Verse 202. Happiness Tranquilizes
There’s no fire like lust,
No evil like aversion,
No dukkha like the aggregates,
No higher bliss than Peace.
“Lửa nào sánh lửa tham?
Ác nào bằng sân hận?
Khổ nào sánh khổ uẩn,
Lạc nào bằng tịnh lạc.”
Explanation:
There is no fire like lust and no crime like hatred. There is no ill like the aggregates (of existence) and no bliss higher than the peace (of Nibbana).
- Không lửa nào bằng lửa tham dục, không ác nào bằng ác sân hận. Không khổ nào bằng khổ Ngũ uẩn và không vui nào bằng vui Niết-bàn.
Verse 203. Worst Disease and Greatest Happiness
Hunger is the greatest ill,
The greatest dukkha – conditionedness,
Knowing this reality at it is:
Nibbana bliss supreme.
“Ðói ăn, bệnh tối thượng
Các hành, khổ tối thượng,
Hiểu như thực là vậy,
Niết Bàn, lạc tối thượng.”
Explanation:
Hunger is the worse disease, conditioned things the worst suffering. Knowing this as it really is, the wise realize Nibbana, the highest bliss.
- Đói là chứng bệnh lớn. Vô thường là nỗi khổ lớn; biết được đúng như thế, đạt đến Niết-bàn vui tối thượng.
Verse 204. Four Supreme Acquisitions
Health’s the greatest gain,
Contentment, best of wealth,
Trusting’s best of kin,
Nibbana bliss supreme.
“Không bệnh, lợi tối thượng,
Biết đủ, tiền tối thượng,
Thành tín đối với nhau,
Là bà con tối thượng.
Niết Bàn, lạc tối thượng.”
Explanation:
Health is the precious gain and contentment the greatest wealth. A trustworthy person is the best kinsman, Nibbana the highest bliss.
- Không bệnh là điều rất lợi, biết đủ là kẻ rất giàu, thành tín là nơi chí thân, Niết-bàn là vui tối thượng.
Verse 205. The Free Are the Purest
Having drunk of solitude
And tasted Peace Sublime,
Free from sorrow, evil-free,
One drinks of Dhamma’s joy.
“Ðã nếm vị độc cư
Ðược hưởng vị nhàn tịnh,
Không sợ hải, không ác,
Nếm được vị pháp hỷ.”
Explanation:
Having savoured the taste of solitude and peace (of Nibbana), pain-free and stainless he becomes, drinking deep the taste of the bliss of Truth.
- Ai từng nếm mùi độc cư, ai từng nếm mùi tịch tịnh, người ấy còn ưa nếm mùi pháp vị để xa lìa mọi tội ác, sợ hãi.
Verse 206. Pleasant Meetings
So fair’s the sight of Noble Ones,
Ever good their company,
By relating not to fools
Ever happy one may be.
“Lành thay, thấy thánh nhân,
Sống chung thường hưởng lạc.
Không thấy những người ngu,
Thường thường được an lạc.”
Explanation:
Good it is to see the Noble Ones; to live with them is ever blissful. One will always be happy by not encountering fools.
- Gặp được bậc Thánh nhơn là rất quí, vì sẽ chung hưởng sự vui lành. Bởi không gặp kẻ ngu si, nên người kia thường hoan hỷ.
Verse 207. Happy Company
Who moves among fool’s company
Must truly grieve for long,
For ill the company of fools
As ever that of foes,
But weal’s a wise one’s company
As meeting of one’s folk.
“Sống chung với người ngu,
Lâu dài bị lo buồn.
Khổ thay gần người ngu
Như thường sống kẻ thù.
Vui thay, gần người trí
Như chung sống bà con.”
Explanation:
Indeed, he who moves in the company of fools grieves for long. Association with fools is ever painful, like partnership with an enemy. But association with the wise is happy, like meeting one’s own kinsmen.
- Đi chung với người ngu, chẳng lúc nào không lo buồn; ở chung với kẻ ngu, khác nào ở chung với quân địch. Ở chung với người trí, vui như hội ngộ với người thân.
Verse 208. The Good and the Wise
Thus, go with the steadfast, wise, well-versed,
Firm of virtue, practice-pure,
Ennobled ‘Such’, who’s sound, sincere,
As moon in wake of the Milky Way.
“Bậc hiền sĩ, trí tuệ
Bậc nghe nhiều, trì giới,
Bậc tự chế, Thánh nhân;
Hãy gần gũi, thân cận
Thiện nhân, trí giả ấy,
Như trăng theo đường sao.”
Explanation:
Therefore, follow the Noble One, who is steadfast, wise, learned, dutiful and devout. One should follow only such a man, who is truly good and discerning, even as the moon follows the path of the stars.
- Đúng thật như vậy : Người hiền trí, người đa văn, người trì giới chân thành và bậc Thánh giả là chỗ nương dựa tốt nhất cho mọi người. Được đi theo những bậc thiện nhân, hiền huệ ấy, khác nào mặt trăng đi theo đường tinh đạo.
