Verse 116. Never Hesitate To Do Good
Make haste towards the good
And check the mind for evil.
The one who’s is slow to make merit
Delights in the evil mind.
“Hãy gấp làm điều lành,
Ngăn tâm làm điều ác.
Ai chậm làm việc lành,
Ý ưa thích việc ác.”
Explanation:
Hasten to do good; restrain your mind from evil. He who is slow in doing good, his mind delights in evil.
- Hãy gấp rút làm lành, chế chỉ tâm tội ác. Hễ biếng nhác làm lành giờ nào thì tâm liền ưa chuyện ác chừng ấy.
Verse 117. Do No Evil Again And Again
If one some evil does
Then do it not again and again.
Do not wish for it anew
For evil grows to dukkha.
“Nếu người làm điều ác,
Chớ tiếp tục làm thêm.
Chớ ước muốn điều ác,
Chứa ác, tất chịu khổ.”
Explanation:
Should a person commit evil, let him not do it again and again.
Let him not find pleasure therein, for painful is the accumulation of evil.
- Nếu đã làm làm ác, chớ tiếp tục làm thêm, chớ vui làm việc ác. Hễ chứa ác nhứt định thọ khổ.
Verse 118. Accumulated Merit Leads To Happiness
If one should some merit make
Do it again and again.
One should wish for it anew
For merit grows to joy.
“Nếu người làm điều thiện,
Nên tiếp tục làm thêm.
Hãy ước muốn điều thiện,
Chứa thiện, được an lạc.”
Explanation:
Should a person do good, let him do it again and again. Let him find pleasure therein, for blissful is the accumulation of good.
- Nếu đã làm việc lành, hãy nên tiếp làm mãi, nên vui làm việc lành. Hễ chứa lành nhứt định thọ lạc.
Verse 119. Evil Seems Sweet Until It Ripens
As long as evil ripens not
Even the evil one goodness knows,
But when the evil ripens
Then the person evil knows.
“Người ác thấy là hiền.
Khi ác chưa chín muồi,
Khi ác nghiệp chín muồi,
Người ác mới thấy ác.”
Explanation:
It may be well with the evil-doer as long as the evil ripens not. But when it does ripen, then the evil-doer sees (the painful results of) his evil deeds.
- Khi nghiệp ác chưa thành thục, kẻ ác cho là vui; khi nghiệp ác đã thành thục, kẻ ác mới hay là ác.
Verse 120. Good May Seem Bad Until Good Mature
As long as goodness ripens not
Even the good one evil knows,
But when the goodness ripens
Then that person knows the good.
“Người hiền thấy là ác,
Khi thiện chưa chín muồi.
Khi thiện được chín muồi,
Người hiền thấy là thiện.”
Explanation:
It may be ill with the doer of good as long as the good ripens not. But when it does ripen, then the doer of good sees (the pleasant results of) his good deeds.
- Khi nghiệp lành chưa thành thục, người lành cho là khổ; khi nghiệp lành đã thành thục, người lành mới biết là lành.
Verse 121. Take Not Evil Lightly
Think lightly not of evil,
‘It will not come to me’,
For by the falling of water drops
A water jar is filled.
The fool with evil fills himself,
He soaks up little by little.
“Chớ chê khinh điều ác,
Cho rằng “chưa đến mình “,
Như nước nhỏ từng giọt,
Rồi bình cũng đầy tràn.
Người ngu chứa đầy ác
Do chất chứa dần dần.”
Explanation:
Think not lightly of evil, saying, “It will not come to me”. Drop by drop is the water pot filled. Likewise, the fool, gathering it little by little, fills himself with evil.
- Chớ khinh điều ác nhỏ, cho rằng “chẳng đưa lại quả báo cho ta”. Phải biết giọt nước nhểu lâu ngày cũng nay bình. Kẻ ngu phu sở dĩ nay tội ác bởi chứa dồn từng chút mà nên.
Verse 122. Merit Grows Little By Little
Think lightly not of goodness,
‘It will not come to me’,
For by the falling of water drops
A water jar is filled.
The sage with goodness fills himself,
He soaks up little by little.
“Chớ chê khinh điều thiện
Cho rằng “Chưa đến mình, ”
Như nước nhỏ từng giọt,
Rồi bình cũng đầy tràn.
Người trí chứa đầy thiện,
Do chất chứa dần dần.”
Explanation:
Think not lightly of good, saying, “It will not come to me.” Drop by drop is the water pot filled. Likewise, the wise man, gathering it little by little, fills himself with good.
- Chớ khinh điều lành nhỏ cho rằng: “chẳng đưa lại quả báo cho ta”. Phải biết giọt nước nhểu lâu ngày cũng làm nay bình. Kẻ trí sở dĩ toàn thiện bởi chứa dồn từng chút từng chút mà nên.
Verse 123. Shun Evil As Poison
As merchant on a perilous path,
Great wealth having little guard,
As life-loving man with poison
So with evil heedful be.
“Ít bạn đường, nhiều tiền,
Người buôn tránh đường hiểm.
Muốn sống, tránh thuốc độc,
Hãy tránh ác như vậy.”
Explanation:
Just as a trader with a small escort and great wealth would avoid a perilous route, or just as one desiring to live avoids poison, even so should one shun evil.
- Như người đi buôn mang nhiều của báu mà thiếu bạn đồng hành, tránh xa con đường nguy hiểm làm sao, như kẻ tham tránh xa thuốc độc như thế nào, thì các ngươi cũng phải tránh xa điều ác thế ấy.
Verse 124. Evil Results From Bad Intentions
If in the hand’s no wound
Poison one may bear.
A woundless one is poisoned not,
Non-doers have no evil.
“Bàn tay không thương tích,
Có thể cầm thuốc độc.
Không thương tích, tránh độc,
Không làm, không có ác.”
Explanation:
If on the hand there is no wound, one may carry even poison in it. Poison does not affect one who is free from wounds. For him who does no evil, there is no ill.
- Với bàn tay không thương tích, có thể nắm thuốc độc mà không bị nhiễm độc; với người không làm ác thì không bao giờ bị ác.
Verse 125. Wrong Done To Others Returns To Doer
Who offends the inoffensive,
The innocent and blameless one,
Upon that fool does evil fall
As fine dust flung against the wind.
“Hại người không ác tâm,
Người thanh tịnh, không uế,
Tội ác đến kẻ ngu,
Như ngược gió tung bụi.”
Explanation:
Like fine dust thrown against the wind, evil falls back upon that fool who offends an inoffensive, pure and guiltless man.
- Đem ác ý xâm phạm đến người không tà vạy, người thanh tịnh vô nhiễm, tội ác sẽ trở lại làm hại kẻ ác như ngược gió tung bụi.
Verse 126. Those Who Pass Away
Some find birth within a womb,
Evil-doer quicken in hell,
Good-farers to the heavens go,
The Unpolluted wholly cool.
“Một số sinh bào thai,
Kẻ ác sinh địa ngục,
Người thiện lên cõi trời,
Vô lậu chứng Niết Bàn.”
Explanation:
Some are born in the womb; the wicked are born in hell; the devout go to heaven; the stainless pass into Nibbãna.
- Con người sinh ra từ bào thai, nhưng kẻ ác thì đọa vào địa ngục, người chính trực thì sinh lên chư thiên, còn cõi Niết bàn chỉ dành riêng cho những ai đã diệt sạch nghiệp sanh tử.
Verse 127. Shelter against Death
Neither in sky nor surrounding by sea,
Nor by dwelling in a mountain cave,
Nowhere is found that place in earth
Where one’s from evil kamma free.
“Không trên trời, giữa biển,
Không lánh vào động núi,
Không chỗ nào trên đời,
Trốn được quả ác nghiệp.”
Explanation:
Neither in the sky nor in mid-ocean, nor by entering into mountain clefts, no-where in the world is there a place where one may escape from the results of evil deeds.
- Phật dạy: chẳng phải bay lên không trung, chẳng phải lặn xuống đáy bể, chẳng phải chui vào hang sâu núi thẳm, dù tìm khắp thế gian nầy, chẳng có nơi nào trốn khỏi nghiệp ác đã gây.
Verse 128. No Escape from Death
Neither in sky nor surrounding by sea,
Nor by dwelling in a mountain cave,
Nowhere is found that place in earth
Where one’s by death not overcome.
“Không trên trời, giữa biển,
Không lánh vào động núi,
Không chỗ nào trên đời,
Trốn khỏi tay thần chết.”
Explanation:
Neither in the sky nor in mid-ocean, nor by entering into mountain clefts, no-where in the world is there a place where one will not be overcome by death.
- Phật dạy: Chẳng phải bay lên không trung, chẳng phải lặn xuống đáy bể, chẳng phải chui vào hang sâu núi thẳm, dù tìm khắp thế gian nầy, chẳng có nơi nào trốn khỏi tử thần.
