A Concealed Priceless Gem – Viên Ngọc Trong Vạt Áo
A poor man visits a rich friend, gets drunk, and passes out.
Một người đàn ông nghèo đến thăm một người bạn giàu có, say rượu, và ngất đi.
The rich man, who has to leave on business, gives his poor man a priceless gem, which he sews into the lining of his friend’s clothes.
Người đàn ông giàu có, phải rời nhà đi kinh doanh, đã tặng viên ngọc vô giá cho người bạn nghèo, bằng cách may vào vạt áo của anh ta.
When the poor man comes to, he resumes his life as a vagrant, unaware of the treasure he received during his blackout.
Gã đó say mèm đều không hay biết, ông lại tiếp tục cuộc sống của mình như là một người lang thang, không biết gì về châu báu ông nhận được trong lúc say xỉn của mình.
Later, he meets the rich man again, who shows him where the gem is concealed, and the poor man realizes his wealth. In the story, the rich man is the Buddha; the poor man is a sattva, drunk with the passions; and the jewel is the truth about the Buddha Nature.
Sau đó, anh ta gặp lại người bạn giàu có một lần nữa, người này chỉ cho anh ta nơi viên ngọc được giấu kín, và người đàn ông nghèo nhận ra sự giàu có của mình. Trong câu chuyện, người đàn ông giàu có là Phật; người nghèo khổ là một sattva, say sưa với niềm đam mê; và viên ngọc là sự thật về Phật Tánh.

Dựa vào Chương 8 – Câu kinh như sau:
“World-Honored One, it was like the case of a man who went to the house of a close friend and, having become drunk on wine, lay down to sleep. At that time the friend had to go out on official business. He took a priceless jewel, sewed it in the lining of the man’s robe, and left it with him when he went out. The man was asleep drunk and knew nothing about it. When he got up, he set out on a journey to other countries. In order to provide himself with food and clothing he had to search with all his energy and diligence, encountering very great hardship and making do with what little he could come by.
Thế-Tôn! Thí như có người đến nhà bạn thân say rượu mà nằm, lúc đó người bạn thân có việc quan phải đi, lấy châu báu vô giá cột trong áo của gã say, cho nó rồi đi. Gã đó say mèm đều không hay biết, sau khi dậy bèn dạo đi đến nước khác, vì việc ăn mặc mà phải gắng sức cầu tìm rất là khổ nhọc, nếu có được chút ít bèn cho là đủ.
“Later, the close friend happened to meet him by chance. The friend said, ‘How absurd, old fellow! Why should you have to do all this for the sake of food and clothing? In the past I wanted to make certain you would be able to live in ease and satisfy the five desires, and so on such-and-such a day and month and year I took a priceless jewel and sewed it in the lining of your robe. It must still be there now. But you did not know about it, and fretted and wore yourself out trying to provide a living for yourself. What nonsense! Now you must take the jewel and exchange it for goods. Then you can have whatever you wish at all times and never experience poverty or want.’
Lúc sau người bạn thân gặp gỡ thấy gã bèn bảo rằng : “Lạ thay! Anh này sao lại vì ăn mặc mà đến nỗi này. Ta lúc trước muốn cho anh được an vui tha hồ thụ năm món dục, ở ngày tháng năm dó, đem châu báu vô giá cột vào trong áo anh nay vẫn còn đó mà anh không biết, lại đi nhọc nhằn sầu khổ để cầu tự nuôi sống thực là khờ lắm; nay anh nên đem ngọc báu đó đổi chác lấy đồ cần dùng thì thường được vừa ý không chỗ thiếu thốn.
“The Buddha is like this friend. When he was still a bodhisattva, he taught and converted us, inspiring in us the determination to seek comprehensive wisdom.
Đức Phật cũng lại như vậy, lúc làm Bồ-Tát giáo hóa chúng con, khiến phát lòng cầu nhứt-thiết-trí, mà chúng con liền bỏ quên không hay không biết.
