“Our schoolmaster used to take a nap every afternoon,” related a disciple of Soyen Shaku. “We children asked him why he did it and he told us: ‘I go to dreamland to meet the old sages just as Confucius did.’ When Confucius slept, he would dream of ancient sages and later tell his followers about them.’
Một người đệ tử của thiền sư Soyen Shaku kể rằng: “Mỗi ngày thầy chúng tôi thường chợp mắt một chút sau lúc giữa trưa. Chúng tôi hỏi thầy vì sao lại ngủ trưa như vậy, và thầy bảo: ‘Ta đi vào trong cõi mộng để gặp các vị cổ thánh, cũng giống như Khổng Tử ngày xưa vậy.’ Khi đức Khổng Tử ngủ, ngài thường mơ thấy các vị cổ thánh và sau đó kể lại cho các đệ tử nghe về họ.’”
“It was extremely hot one day so some of us took a nap. Our schoolmaster scolded us. ‘We went to dreamland to meet the ancient sages the same as Confucius did,’ we explained. ‘What was the message from those sages?’ Our schoolmaster demanded. One of us replied: ‘We went to dreamland and met the sages and asked them if our schoolmaster came there every afternoon, but they said they had never seen any such fellow.’”
“Một ngày kia trời quá nóng bức nên một số người trong chúng tôi thiếp ngủ đi chốc lát. Thầy quở trách chúng tôi về việc đó. Chúng tôi liền biện bạch: ‘Chúng con đi vào cõi mộng để gặp các vị cổ thánh giống như Khổng Tử.’ Thầy chúng tôi liền vặn hỏi: ‘Thế các vị cổ thánh đã nói gì?’ Một người trong bọn chúng tôi trả lời: ‘Chúng con đã đi vào cõi mộng gặp các vị thánh và hỏi xem thầy có đến đó vào mỗi buổi trưa hay không, nhưng họ nói là chưa bao giờ gặp thầy cả!’”
