The cook monk Dairyo, at Bankei’s monastery, decided that he would take good care of his old teacher’s health and give him only fresh miso, a basic of soy beans mixed with wheat and yeast that often ferments. Bankei, noticing that he was being served better miso than his pupils, asked: “Who is the cook today?”
Tại thiền viện của ngài Bankei, ông tăng phụ trách việc ẩm thực là Dairyo hết lòng muốn chăm sóc tốt cho sức khỏe vị thầy già của mình nên chỉ cho ngài dùng toàn món miso tươi. Miso là một loại thực phẩm chủ yếu làm bằng đậu nành trộn với lúa mạch và men bia, thường để lên men.
Ngài Bankei nhận ra rằng mình đang được ăn món miso tốt hơn so với các đệ tử của mình, liền hỏi: “Hôm nay ai nấu bếp?”
Dairyo was sent before him. Bankei learned, that according to his age and position he should eat only fresh miso. So he said to the cook: “Then you think I shouldn’t eat at all.” With this he entered his room and locked the door.
Dairyo được gọi đến và thưa với thầy rằng, do nơi tuổi tác và cương vị của thầy, thầy chỉ nên ăn toàn loại miso tươi mà thôi. Ngài Bankei liền bảo ông: “Nói vậy tức là ông cho rằng ta không nên ăn gì cả.” Nói xong, ngài bước vào phòng và khóa cửa lại.
Dairyo, sitting outside the door, asked his teacher’s pardon. Bankei would not answer. For seven days Dairyo sat outside and Bankei within.
Dairyo ngồi ngoài cửa, luôn miệng xin thầy tha lỗi. Ngài Bankei không trả lời. Trong suốt bảy ngày, Dairyo ngồi mãi bên ngoài phòng và ngài Bankei vẫn khóa cửa ở trong.
Nói xong, ngài bước vào phòng và khóa cửa lại. – With this he entered his room and locked the door.
Finally in desperation an adherent called loudly to Bankei: “You may be all right, old teacher, but this young disciple here has to eat. He cannot go without food forever.”
Cuối cùng, một người đệ tử thất vọng kêu lên: “Có thể là thầy sẽ không sao, thưa thầy. Nhưng người đệ tử trẻ này cần phải được ăn. Anh ta không thể tuyệt thực mãi!”
At that Bankei opened the door. He was smiling. He told Dairyo: “I insist on eating the same food as the least of my followers. When you become the teacher I do not want you to forget this.”
Nghe như thế, ngài Bankei mở cửa, khuôn mặt nhoẻn một nụ cười. Ngài bảo Dairyo: “Ta yêu cầu phải được ăn cùng một loại thức ăn như những đệ tử thấp kém nhất của ta. Khi nào con trở thành một bậc thầy, ta muốn con đừng quên điều đó.”
