Tosui was a well-known Zen teacher of his time. He had lived in several temples and taught in various provinces.
Tosui là một thiền sư lỗi lạc thời bấy giờ. Ngài đã từng sống trong nhiều tự viện và giáo hóa ở nhiều nơi.
The last temple he visited accumulated so many adherents that Tosui told them he was going to quit the lecture business entirely. He advised them to disperse and to go wherever they desired. After that no one could find any trace of him.
Khi ngài trụ ở ngôi chùa cuối cùng, có quá nhiều người theo học đến nỗi ngài phải tuyên bố với họ là sẽ chấm dứt không giảng dạy gì nữa. Ngài khuyên họ nên giải tán và đi đến bất cứ nơi nào họ muốn. Từ đó về sau, không còn ai tìm được bất cứ dấu vết nào của ngài.
Three years later one of his disciples discovered him living with some beggars under a bridge in Kyoto. He at once implored Tosui to teach him.
Sau đó 3 năm, một người trong số đệ tử bắt gặp ngài đang sống với mấy người ăn mày dưới một gầm cầu ở Kyoto. Ngay lập tức, người này khẩn khoản cầu xin ngài chỉ dạy.
“If you can do as I do for even a couple of days, I might,” Tosui replied.
Ngài Tosui đáp: “Nếu con có thể làm được như ta, dù chỉ trong vài ngày, may ra ta có thể dạy con.”
So, the former disciple dressed as a beggar and spent a day with Tosui. The following day one of the beggars died. Tosui and his pupil carried the body off at midnight and buried it on a mountainside. After that they returned to their shelter under the bridge.
Thế là người đệ tử này liền ăn mặc giống như ăn mày và sống với ngài Tosui trong một ngày. Ngày hôm sau có một người ăn mày chết. Tosui và người đệ tử khiêng xác ông ta đi vào lúc nửa đêm và chôn cất trên một sườn núi. Sau đó, họ lại trở về chỗ ngụ dưới gầm cầu.
Tosui slept soundly the remainder of the night, but the disciple could not sleep. When morning came Tosui said: “We do not have to beg food today. Our dead friend has left some over there.” But the disciple was unable to eat a single bite of it.
Từ đó đến sáng ngài Tosui ngủ say ngon lành, nhưng người đệ tử thì không sao chợp mắt. Sáng ra, ngài Tosui bảo: “Hôm nay chúng ta không cần phải đi xin ăn. Ông bạn vừa chết còn để lại ít thức ăn ở đằng kia.” Nhưng người đệ tử không tài nào nuốt trôi dù chỉ một miếng!
“I have said you could not do as I,” concluded Tosui. “Get out of here and do not bother me again.”
Ngài Tosui kết luận: “Ta đã nói là con không thể làm như ta. Hãy mau rời khỏi đây và đừng bao giờ quấy rầy ta nữa.”
