While Seisetsu was the master of Engaku in Kamakura he required larger quarters, since those in which he was teaching were over-crowded.
Khi thiền sư Seisetsu giáo hóa ở chùa Engaku tại Kamakura, ngài cần có những giảng đường rộng hơn, vì những nơi ngài đang giảng dạy đều đã chật chội vì có quá đông người theo học.
Umezu Seibei, a merchant of Edo, decided to donate five hundred pieces of gold called ryo toward the construction of a more commodious school. This money he brought to the teacher.
Một thương gia ở Edo là Umezu Seibei quyết định sẽ tài trợ 500 đồng ryo vàng để xây dựng thêm một giảng đường rộng rãi hơn. Ông liền mang số tiền này đến gặp vị thiền sư.
Seisetsu said: “All right. I will take it.”
Ngài Seisetsu nói: “Được rồi, tôi sẽ nhận.”
Umezu gave Seisetsu the sack of gold, but he was dissatisfied with the attitude of the teacher.
Umezu trao túi vàng cho ngài Seisetsu, nhưng ông ta không hài lòng với thái độ của vị thầy.
One might live a whole year on three ryo, and the merchant had not even been thanked for five hundred.
Chỉ với 3 đồng ryo vàng là có thể đủ để một người sống trọn trong một năm, nhưng đưa ra đến 500 đồng ryo vàng mà ông ta thậm chí không nhận được cả một tiếng cảm ơn!
“In that sack are five hundred ryo.” hinted Umezu.
“You told me that before.” replied Seisetsu.
“Even if I am a wealthy merchant, five hundred ryo is a lot of money,” said Umezu.
Ông ta nhắc khéo: “Trong túi đó có 500 ryo.”
Ngài Seisetsu đáp: “Lúc nãy ông có nói rồi.”
Umezu nói: “Dù tôi có là một thương gia giàu có thì 500 ryo vẫn là một món tiền rất lớn!”
“Do you want me to thank you for it?” asked Seisetsu.
“You ought to,” replied Umezu.
“Why should I?” inquired Seisetsu. “The giver should be thankful.”
Ngài Seisetsu hỏi: “Ông muốn tôi cảm ơn ông về việc này?”
Umezu đáp: “Vâng, thầy nên làm như thế mới hợp lẽ.”
Ngài Seisetsu hỏi vặn lại: “Sao lại là tôi? Người cho mới phải cảm ơn chứ!”
