One evening as Shichiri Kojun was reciting sutras a thief with a sharp sword entered, demanding either his money or his life.
Shichiri told him: “Do not disturb me. You can find the money in that drawer.” Then he resumed his recitation.
Một buổi tối, thiền sư Shichiri Kojun đang tụng kinh thì có một tên trộm đột nhập, mang theo thanh gươm bén, bảo thiền sư hãy đưa tiền cho hắn nếu không sẽ bị giết chết.
Thiền sư Shichiri bảo hắn: “Đừng quấy rầy ta. Anh có thể lấy tiền trong ngăn kéo ở đằng kia.” Rồi ngài tiếp tục tụng kinh.
A little while afterwards he stopped and called: “Don’t take it all. I need some to pay taxes with tomorrow.”
The intruder gathered up most of the money and started to leave. “Thank a person when you receive a gift.” Shichiri added.
Một lát sau, ngài dừng lại và gọi tên trộm: “Này, đừng có lấy hết! Ta cần một ít để ngày mai nộp thuế.”
Tên trộm lấy gần hết số tiền và chuẩn bị chuồn đi. Ngài Shichiri nói thêm: “Nhận quà của người khác thì phải cảm ơn chứ, anh bạn!”
The man thanked him and made off.
Tên trộm cảm ơn ngài và chuồn thẳng.
A few days afterwards the fellow was caught and confessed, among others, the offence against Shichiri. When Shichiri was called as a witness he said: “This man is no thief, at least as far as I am concerned. I gave him the money and he thanked me for it.”
After he had finished his prison term, the man went to Shichiri and became his disciple.
Mấy ngày sau, tên trộm bị bắt và nhận tội. Trong số những người đã bị trộm, hắn khai ra có ngài Shichiri. Khi ngài được mời đến để làm nhân chứng, ngài bảo: “Theo tôi thì người này không phải kẻ trộm. Tôi cho anh ta tiền và anh ta có cảm ơn tôi rồi.”
Sau khi mãn hạn tù, người ấy tìm đến ngài Shichiri và trở thành đệ tử của ngài.
