3) — “Bhikkhus, I will teach you about the devas of the Gandhabba order. Listen to that….
4) “And what, bhikkhus, are the devas of the Gandhabba order? There are, bhikkhus, devas dwelling in fragrant roots, devas dwelling in fragrant heartwood, devas dwelling in fragrant softwood, devas dwelling in fragrant bark, devas dwelling in fragrant shoots, devas dwelling in fragrant leaves, devas dwelling in fragrant flowers, devas dwelling in fragrant fruits, devas dwelling in fragrant sap, and devas dwelling in fragrant scents.
5) “These, bhikkhus, are called the devas of the Gandhabba order.”

3) — Này các Tỷ-kheo, Ta sẽ thuyết cho các Ông về chư Thiên thuộc loại Gandhabba (Càn-thát-bà). Hãy lắng nghe.
4) Và này các Tỷ-kheo, thế nào là chư Thiên thuộc loại Gandhabba? Có chư Thiên, này các Tỷ-kheo, trú hương rễ cây. Có chư Thiên, này các Tỷ-kheo, trú hương lõi cây. Có chư Thiên, này các Tỷ-kheo, trú hương giác cây. Có chư Thiên, này các Tỷ-kheo, trú hương vỏ cây trong. Có chư Thiên, này các Tỷ-kheo, trú hương vỏ cây ngoài. Có chư Thiên, này các Tỷ-kheo, trú hương lá cây. Có chư Thiên, này các Tỷ-kheo, trú hương bông. Có chư Thiên, này các Tỷ-kheo, trú hương trái cây. Có chư Thiên, này các Tỷ-kheo, trú hương vị. Có chư Thiên, này các Tỷ-kheo, trú hương hương.
5) Những loại này, này các Tỷ-kheo được gọi là chư Thiên thuộc loại Càn-thát-bà.
- Good Conduct – Thiện Hành
1-3) At Sāvatthī…
4) Sitting to one side, that bhikkhu said to the Blessed One:
— “Venerable sir, what is the cause and reason why someone here, with the breakup of the body, after death, is reborn in the company of the devas of the Gandhabba order?”
5) — “Here, bhikkhu, someone practises good conduct of body, speech, and mind. He has heard: ‘The devas of the Gandhabba order are long-lived, beautiful, and abound in happiness.’
6) He thinks: ‘Oh, with the breakup of the body, after death, may I be reborn in the company of the devas of the Gandhabba order!’ Then, with the breakup of the body, after death, he is reborn in the company of the devas of the Gandhabba order.
7) “This, bhikkhu, is the cause and reason why someone here, with the breakup of the body, after death, is reborn in the company of the devas of the Gandhabba order.”

4) Ngồi xuống một bên, Tỷ-kheo ấy bạch Thế Tôn:
— Do nhân gì, do duyên gì, bạch Thế Tôn, ở đây, một loại (chúng sanh), sau khi thân hoại mạng chung, được sanh cọng trú với chư Thiên thuộc loại Gandhabba?
5) — Ở đây, này các Tỷ-kheo, có loại (chúng sanh) làm thiện hạnh về thân, làm thiện hạnh về lời nói, làm thiện hạnh về ý. Họ nghe nói như sau: “Chư Thiên thuộc loại Gandhabba được thọ mạng lâu dài, nhan sắc thù thắng, hưởng thọ nhiều lạc”.
6) Họ suy nghĩ như sau: “Ôi mong rằng, sau khi thân hoại mạng chung, chúng ta được sanh cọng trú với chư Thiên thuộc loại Gandhabba!” Sau khi thân hoại mạng chung, họ được sanh cọng trú với chư Thiên thuộc loại Gandhabba.
7) Do nhân này, do duyên này, này các Tỷ-kheo, ở đây, có loại (chúng sanh), sau khi thân hoại mạng chung, được sanh cọng trú với chư Thiên thuộc loại Gandhabba.
- Giver (1) – Kẻ Bố Thí (1)
1-4) At Sāvatthī…
Sitting to one side, that bhikkhu said to the Blessed One:
— “Venerable sir, what is the cause and reason why someone here, with the breakup of the body, after death, is reborn in the company of the devas who dwell in fragrant roots?”
5) — “Here, bhikkhu, someone practices good conduct of body, speech, and mind. He has heard: ‘The devas who dwell in fragrant roots are long-lived, beautiful, and abound in happiness.’
6) He thinks: ‘Oh, with the breakup of the body, after death, may I be reborn in the company of the devas who dwell in fragrant roots!’
He becomes a giver of fragrant roots. Then, with the breakup of the body, after death, he is reborn in the company of the devas who dwell in fragrant roots.
7) “This, bhikkhu, is the cause and reason why someone here, with the breakup of the body, after death, is reborn in the company of the devas who dwell in fragrant roots.”
1-4) Nhân duyên ở Sàvatthi…
Ngồi xuống một bên, Tỷ-kheo ấy bạch Thế Tôn:
— Do nhân gì, do duyên gì, bạch Thế Tôn, ở đây có loại chúng sanh, sau khi thân hoại mạng chung, được sanh cọng trú với chư Thiên trú hương rễ cây?
5) — Ở đây, này Tỷ-kheo, có loại chúng sanh làm thiện hạnh về thân, làm thiện hạnh về lời nói, làm thiện hạnh về ý. Họ được nghe như sau: “Chư Thiên thuộc loại Gandhabba trú hương rễ cây. Họ được thọ mạng lâu dài, nhan sắc thù thắng, hưởng thọ nhiều lạc”.
6) Họ suy nghĩ như sau: “Ôi mong rằng, sau khi thân hoại mạng chung, chúng ta được sanh cọng trú với chư Thiên trú hương rễ cây!”
Họ bố thí hương rễ cây. Sau khi thân hoại mạng chung, họ được sanh cọng trú với chư Thiên trú hương rễ cây.
7) Do nhân này, do duyên này, này Tỷ-kheo, ở đây, một loại (chúng sanh) được sanh cọng trú với chư Thiên trú hương rễ cây.
4-12 Giver (2-10) – Kẻ Bố Thí (2-10)
(The same paradigm is repeated for each of the other groups of Gandhabbas—those who dwell in fragrant heartwood, etc.—as enumerated in §1, each the giver of the corresponding type of gift.)

13-22 With the Support of Giving (1) – Ủng Hộ Bố Thí (1)
1-4) At Sāvatthī…. Sitting to one side, that bhikkhu said to the Blessed One:
— “Venerable sir, what is the cause and reason why someone here, with the breakup of the body, after death, is reborn in the company of the devas who dwell in fragrant roots?”
5) — “Here, bhikkhu, someone practises good conduct of body, speech, and mind. He has heard: ‘The devas who dwell in fragrant roots are long-lived, beautiful, and abound in happiness.’
6) “He thinks: ‘Oh, with the breakup of the body, after death, may I be reborn in the company of the devas who dwell in fragrant roots!’ He gives food…. He gives drink…. He gives clothing…. He gives a vehicle…. He gives a garland…. He gives a fragrance…. He gives an unguent…. He gives a bed…. He gives a dwelling…. He gives a lamp. Then, with the breakup of the body, after death, he is reborn in the company of the devas who dwell in fragrant roots.
7) “This, bhikkhu, is the cause and reason why someone here, with the breakup of the body, after death, is reborn in the company of the devas who dwell in fragrant roots.”
(Như kinh trên, chỉ thế vào “họ bố thí đồ ăn, đồ uống, vải mặc, cỗ xe, vòng hoa, hương, hương liệu xoa bóp, ngọa cụ, nhà cửa, đèn dầu, để sanh cộng trú với chư Thiên sống trên hương từ gốc rễ”).
