There is an old Buddhist story which describes in much the same way as the story above how we might respond to life-or-death crises.

A man was being chased by a tiger in the jungle. Tigers can run much faster than a man, and they eat men too. The tiger was hungry; the man was in trouble.
Anh nọ vô rừng bị cọp rượt. Cọp chạy nhanh hơn người và ăn thịt người nên hễ bị cọp đói rượt người ít khi toàn mạng.
With the tiger almost upon him, the man saw a well by the side of the path. In desperation, he leapt in. As soon as he had committed himself to the leap, he saw what a big mistake he had made. The well was dry and, at its bottom, he could see the coils of a big black snake.
Cọp gần kề, anh định nhảy đại xuống giếng bên đường. Nhưng rủi cho anh, giếng không có nước mà có con rắn hổ mang to đang khoanh tròn dưới đáy.
Instinctively, his arm reached for the side of the well, where his hand found the root of a tree. The root checked his fall. When he had gathered his senses, he looked down to see the black snake raise its head to full height and try to strike him on his feet; but his feet were a fraction too high. He looked up to see the tiger leaning into the well trying to paw him from above; but his hand holding the root was a fraction too low. As he contemplated his dire predicament, he saw two mice, one white and one black, emerge from a small hole and begin chewing on the root.
As the tiger was attempting to paw at the man, its hind-quarters were rubbing against a small tree, making it shake. On a branch of that tree, overhanging the well, was a bee hive. Honey began to drop into the well. The man put out his tongue and caught some. ‘Mmmm! That tastes good,’ he said to himself and smiled.
Theo bản năng, anh chụp thành giếng và nắm trúng một rễ cây, anh đu tòn ten trong lúc con rắn vươn cổ vói mổ chân anh mà không tới. Ngưỡng nhìn lên anh thấy con cọp đang vói chân cào tay anh nhưng cũng không tới. May quá. Trong hoàn cảnh may mắn ấy anh chợt thấy hai con chuột, một trắng một đen, trong hang chui ra và bắt đầu ngậm rễ cây anh đang níu. Cùng lúc mật ong từ trên trời rơi xuống trúng mũi anh; thì ra lúc con cọp vói bắt anh, thân nó đè lên một cành cây làm ổ ong mật trên cành cây bị bể để mật rơi lã chã. Anh liếm mật, mỉm cười và thầm nói với mình, “Ngon, ngon tuyệt!”
This story, as it is traditionally told, ends there. That is why it is so true to life. Life, like those long-running TV soaps, doesn’t have a neat ending. Life is forever in the process of completion.
Chuyện kể chấm dứt tại đây. Do đó rất thật đối với đời. Đời, như chiếu trong các chương trình nhiều tập trên truyền hình, không có hồi kết cuộc gọn ghẽ, rõ ràng. Đời là một tiến trình không có đoạn kết.
Moreover, often in our life it is as if we are caught between a hungry tiger and a big black snake, between death and something worse, with day and night (the two mice) chewing away at our precarious grip on life. Even in such dire situations, there is always some honey dripping from some-where. If we are wise, we will put out our tongue and enjoy some of that honey. Why not? When there’s nothing to do, then do nothing, and enjoy some of life’s honey.
Hơn thế nữa, trong đời chúng ta thường hay bị kẹt giữa con cọp đói (cái chết) và con rắn hổ mang to (tai họa) với hai con chuột (ngày và đêm) đang gặm nhấm cái rễ cây (sự nắm níu) cứu mạng (sự sống). Là người khôn ngoan, chúng ta hãy liếm mật (hạnh phúc) đang nhiểu từng giọt (tại đây và trong khoảnh khắc này). Tại sao không? Lúc không có gì làm, đừng làm gì cả, hãy thưởng thức chút mật ngọt của đời.
As I said, the story traditionally ends there. However, in order to make a point, I usually tell my audience the true ending. This is what happened next.
As the man was enjoying the honey, the mice were chewing the root thinner and thinner, the big black snake was stretching closer and closer to the man’s feet, and the tiger was leaning so its paw was almost reaching the man’s hand. Then the tiger leant too far. It tumbled into the well, missing the man, crushing the snake to death, and dying itself in the fall.
Như nói trên, chuyện không có hồi kết cuộc nhưng tôi (tác giả) luôn luôn thêm đoạn kết. Con cọp vói bị hụt chân rớt xuống giếng gãy cổ chết và đè con rắn chết luôn. (Tôi – người dịch – xin được dịch thêm một chút nữa: hai con chuột gặm đứt rễ cây sau đó khiến anh rớt xuống giếng. Nhưng nhờ thân con cọp làm nệm và thân rắn làm lò xo lót nệm nên anh rớt xuống nhẹ nhàng. Xong anh nhún mình trên thân cọp và thân con rắn nhảy phóc qua thành giếng lên mặt đất. Anh phủi tay, đi tìm và bắt lấy ổ ong, ăn mật).
Well, it could happen! And something unexpected usually does happen. That’s our life. So why waste the moments of honey, even in the most desperate of troubles. The future is uncertain. We never can be sure of what’s coming next.
Vâng, mọi việc đều có thể xảy ra, kể cả việc không ai ngờ. Đời là vậy! Vậy sao chúng ta lại bỏ phí đi những giây phút ngọt ngào, dẫu hoàn cảnh có hết sức khó khăn. Tương lai chưa đến và bất định; chúng ta không thể nói chắc việc gì sẽ xảy đến.
