Bài số 20: Lễ hội Phật giáo – Buddhist Festivals

Buddhists have many festivals throughout the year. The following three are common to all Buddhists. During these festivals, people can take refuge, take precepts or leave their home life to become monks and nuns.

Phật giáo có nhiều lễ hội trong suốt một năm. Có ba lễ hội phổ biến nhất đối với Phật tử. Trong những lễ hội này, Phật tử có thể ở ẩn, giữ giới hoặc rời bỏ cuộc sống ở nhà để trở thành tỳ kheo và tỳ kheo ni.

1. Buddha’s Birth Day (Vesak) – Ngày Phật Đản Sanh (Lễ Phật Đản)

On 8th May 2022 in China, Vietnam, Philippines.

On 15 May 2022 in Singapore, Thailand, Sri Lanka

On May 16 2022 in Indonesia, India and Nepal.

For the Buddhist community,

The most important event of the year is the celebration

Of the birth of the Buddha.

It falls on the full-moon day in April Lunar year.

This occasion is observed by millions of Buddhists throughout the world.

It is called Vesak in Sri Lanka, Visakha Puja in Thailand.

Đối với cộng đồng Phật tử,

Sự kiện quan trọng nhất trong một năm là kỷ niệm

Ngày sanh của Đức Phật.

Vào ngày rằm của tháng Tư âm lịch.

Đây là dịp để hàng triệu người Phật tử trên thế giới

Viếng thăm chùa và tu viện.

Nó được xem ngày quốc lễ ở Srilanka và Thái Lan.

On this day, Buddhists in some countries like China and Korea would take part in the ceremonial bathing of the Buddha. They pour ladles of water scented with flower petals over a statue of the baby Buddha. This symbolizes purifying their thoughts and actions.

Ngày này, Phật tử ở một vài quốc gia như Trung Quốc, Hàn Quốc cũng tham gia lễ tắm Phật. Họ rót từng gáo nước được ướp hoa thơm tưới lên tượng Phật hài đồng. Đây là biểu tượng sự tinh khiết trong ý nghĩ và hành động.

The temples are elegantly decorated with flowers and banners;

The altars are full of offerings.

Vegetarian meals are provided for all.

Captive animals, such as birds and turtles, are set free from their cages.

This is a very joyous day for everyone.

Các chùa trang trí thanh nhã với hoa tươi và băng rôn.

Án thờ với những đồ cúng dường.

Thức ăn chay được cung cấp cho tất cả mọi người.

Lễ phóng sanh cho các con thú bị giam cầm như chim, rùa.

Đây là ngày vui của các Phật tử.

2. Dharma Day (Asalha Puja) – Ngày Pháp

Asalha Puja, known as “Dharma Day”, is celebrated on the full-moon day in July Lunar year. This day commemorates the very first time the Buddha taught Dharma to the five monks in the Deer Park at Benares, India.

Ngày Pháp được kỷ niệm vào rằm tháng 7 âm lịch. Đây là ngày kỷ niệm ngày đầu tiên Phật giảng Pháp cho 5 tỳ kheo ở khu rừng lộc uyển tại Benares, Ấn Độ.

3. Sangha Day (Kathina) – Ngày Tăng

Sangha Day or Kathina is usually held in October. In the Theravada or Southern tradition, monks go on a three-month retreat during the rainy season. After the retreat, the laity offer robes and gifts to them. This day symbolizes the close relationship between the monks and the lay people. On almost all of these special occasions, Buddhists celebrate these events by taking the Threefold Refuge, accepting observance of the Five Precepts, offering flowers and incense to the Buddha, chanting Sutras, meditating, offering alms to the monks and nuns and listening to Dharma talks.

Ngày tăng thường tổ chức vào tháng Mười. Các tỳ kheo đi vào an cư kiết hạ ba tháng trong mùa mưa. Sau mùa an cư, các cư sĩ tổ chức ngày Tăng để cúng dường áo choàng, và quà cho các tăng. Đây là ngày biểu hiện cho sự đoàn kết giữa các tăng và cư sĩ. Phần lớn, tất cả các dịp đặc biệt của Đạo Phật đều tổ chức quy y, nương tựa Tam Bảo, thực hành theo Năm giới, dâng hương và hoa để lễ Phật, cầu nguyện cho các vong linh, thiền định, cúng dường đến tu sĩ nam, tu sĩ nữ và lắng nghe Pháp.
