Bassui wrote the following letter to one of his disciples who was about to die:
Một trong các đệ tử của ngài Bassui đang hấp hối và ngài đã viết cho anh ta lá thư sau đây:
“The essence of your mind is not born, so it will never die. It is not an existence, which is perishable. It is not an emptiness, which is a mere void. It has neither color nor form. It enjoys no pleasures and suffers no pains.”
“Thể tánh trong tâm con không sinh nên cũng không bao giờ diệt. Thể tánh ấy như một khoảng trống. Thể tánh ấy không có màu sắc, hình thể. Thể tánh ấy không thọ hưởng niềm vui và cũng không chịu đựng khổ đau.”
“I know you are very ill. Like a good Zen student, you are facing that sickness squarely. You may not know exactly who is suffering, but question yourself: What is the essence of this mind? Think only of this. You will need no more. Covet nothing. Your end which is endless is as a snow-flake dissolving in the pure air.”
“Ta biết con bệnh rất nặng. Là một thiền sinh giỏi, con đang dũng cảm đối mặt với căn bệnh. Có thể con không biết chính xác là ai đang đau đớn, nhưng hãy tự vấn rằng: ‘Thể tánh của tâm này là gì?’ Chỉ suy nghĩ duy nhất một điều này thôi! Con sẽ không cần gì thêm nữa. Đừng mong cầu gì cả. Cái chết của con vốn không phải là chấm dứt, chỉ như một bông tuyết tan biến giữa trời không!”
