There are two kinds of freedom to be found in our
world: the freedom of desires, and the freedom from
desires.
Ở đời có hai hình thức tự do: tự do ham muốn và tự do thoát khỏi ham muốn.
Our modern Western culture only recognises the first of
these, freedom of desires. It then worships such a freedom by
enshrining it at the forefront of national constitutions and bills
of human rights. One can say that the underlying creed of
most Western democracies is to protect their people’s free-
dom to realise their desires, as far as this is possible. It is
remarkable that in such countries people do not feel very free.
Văn hóa phương Tây chọn loại tự do thứ nhất, tôn sùng nó và đặt nó lên trang đầu của hiến pháp quốc gia và của bản tuyên ngôn nhân quyền. Có thể nói rằng hầu hết các nền dân chủ của phương Tây đều hàm chứa một tín điều: Bảo vệ tự do của con người để họ trọn quyền thực hiện điều họ mong muốn. Nhưng rất tiếc, trong các nền dân chủ ấy con người nào thật sự được tự do hoàn toàn!
The second kind of freedom, freedom from desires, is cele-
brated only in some religious communities. It celebrates
contentment, peace that is free from desires. It is remarkable
that in such abstemious communities like my monastery, peo-
ple feel free.
Loại tự do thứ hai – thoát khỏi sự ham muốn – chỉ được thấy trong một số cộng đồng đạo giáo. Không ham muốn hay vô tham được đánh dấu bằng sự mãn nguyện, tức trạng thái tự tại không vị tham ái chế ngự. Trong cộng đồng tự tại, như đạo tràng của chúng tôi chẳng hạn, mọi người đều thật sự tự do hoàn toàn.
